Tair Kowalsky Bass
Head of Growth
Tel Aviv — Israel
How did your last role equip you for this one?
Before Square Peg, I built and ran the SigmaLabs accelerator for Entrée Capital to accelerate early-stage startups and support post-seed companies alongside seasoned entrepreneurs. I loved creating value for them in different stages of their companies and their career, helping with biz-bev, and building an influential community. It was the perfect training ground for Square Peg.
Why should someone build a startup?
The right way is to identify a problem in a big market and create an innovative solution to it. If you have the resilience for a long rocky journey, a clear vision for the future of the company, a strong belief in your pain and solution, and firm conviction for all of the above, build a company!
Where's the joy in your work?
There are a lot of small moments and small victories that make every day of my job exciting. Ultimately, it all comes to where I, as an individual and we as a team, create impact, influence outcomes for entrepreneurs or the ecosystem, and even industries.
What advice do you live by?
Cry a river, build a bridge, and get over it! And also, Hakuna Matata.
Where did you learn the most in your career?
Pivoting my career path and founding HAC, a mentor-led program and the first municipal accelerator in Israel (and globally!) was the best school one could ask. I had to map and navigate the Israeli entrepreneurship ecosystem, understand what entrepreneurs need, recruit an engaged set of mentors and deliver value consistently. With time I focused my efforts on strengthening the HAC community I created, helped companies go global, and used networking for successful biz-dev. I've also learned a great deal about myself – that I'm not afraid to take risks and am a fast learner; also, that I own the skill to read people, and should trust my instincts.
What piece of entertainment do you wish you could re-experience for the first-time?
Game of Thrones, all over again.
Who is your greatest mentor?
Ido Yablonka. Look him up, and you will immediately understand why.
What don't others know about working at Square Peg?
We love spending time together! We make a big effort to get the global team together as often as possible. When we do, it's like a family soiree.
Share an example of the team living the values at Square Peg.
On our Nov 19 offsite, we had a Square Peg Values session. It was 2 hours on the agenda that were dedicated, especially for that – Getting to know the team's shared values and learning each individual's core values. For me, that was a first!
What one thing inspires you every day at Square Peg?
The ocean view from our TLV office, backing extraordinary entrepreneurs and working with such a committed team.
